Does Your Home Need Electrical Rewiring?

Electrical wiring is hidden behind walls, ceilings, and floors, so problems with an aging system are not always immediately visible. In many cases, homeowners first notice smaller electrical issues such as flickering lights, frequently tripping breakers, outdated outlets, or circuits that cannot keep up with modern appliances.

Older homes may also contain electrical systems installed when households used significantly less electricity than they do today.

A professional electrical evaluation can help determine whether your home needs a complete whole-house rewire or more targeted electrical upgrades.

Common Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring

Two-Prong or Ungrounded Outlets

Two-prong outlets are commonly associated with older electrical systems that do not provide the grounding found in modern residential wiring.

If your home still contains numerous two-prong outlets, TNT Electric can evaluate the wiring behind them and determine what electrical upgrades may be appropriate.

Frequent Breaker Trips

A breaker that trips repeatedly may indicate an overloaded circuit or another electrical problem.

Older homes often have fewer circuits than modern homes, which can result in appliances, electronics, and lighting sharing circuits that were not designed for today’s level of electrical demand.

Flickering or Dimming Lights

Lights that flicker, dim, or change brightness when appliances turn on can indicate overloaded circuits, loose connections, or other issues within the electrical system.

Outdated Electrical Wiring

Older wiring materials and insulation can deteriorate over time. Wiring may also have been modified by multiple owners or contractors over the life of the home.

Replacing outdated wiring provides an opportunity to modernize circuits, grounding, outlets, switches, and other parts of the electrical system.

Knob-and-Tube Wiring

Knob-and-tube wiring is an older wiring method commonly found in homes built before the mid-20th century. It does not include the grounding conductor used in modern residential electrical systems.

TNT Electric provides dedicated knob-and-tube rewiring for older homes.

Aluminum Branch Wiring

Some homes built during the 1960s and 1970s were wired using aluminum branch-circuit wiring rather than copper.

If aluminum wiring is present, TNT Electric can evaluate the condition of the system and determine whether repair, specialized connections, or replacement is appropriate.

Too Few Circuits for Modern Electrical Demand

Older electrical systems may not have enough circuits for modern kitchens, laundry rooms, home offices, entertainment systems, HVAC equipment, and other electrical loads.

Rewiring allows the electrical layout to be updated so power can be distributed across appropriately designed circuits.

You Are Remodeling an Older Home

A major remodel can be an ideal time to evaluate old wiring because walls and ceilings may already be accessible.

Electrical updates can then be coordinated with new lighting, appliances, outlets, switches, and changes to the room layout.

What Is Included in a Whole-House Rewire?

Whole-house rewiring involves replacing outdated electrical wiring and updating circuits throughout the home so the electrical system can better support modern electrical use.

The exact scope of a project depends on the age and construction of the home, the type and condition of the existing wiring, accessibility, electrical panel capacity, and the electrical needs of the household.

Whole-House Rewiring Services Can Include:

  • Replacement of outdated electrical wiring
  • Installation of modern copper wiring
  • Knob-and-tube wiring replacement
  • Replacement of aging branch circuits
  • New electrical circuits
  • Grounded outlet installation
  • Outlet and switch rewiring
  • Additional outlets and switches
  • Lighting circuit upgrades
  • Kitchen circuit upgrades
  • Dedicated appliance circuits
  • Bathroom electrical upgrades
  • Laundry room circuits
  • Garage circuits
  • Grounding improvements
  • Electrical panel connections
  • Electrical panel upgrades when needed
  • Electrical testing after installation

Replacing Outdated Electrical Wiring

The primary goal of a whole-house rewire is to replace outdated wiring with modern wiring suitable for the home’s current electrical system.

The new wiring connects outlets, switches, fixtures, appliances, and other electrical equipment to properly designed circuits throughout the home.

Updating the wiring also creates an opportunity to correct older electrical modifications and develop a more practical circuit layout for the way the home is used today.

Modern rewiring can include:
  • Modern copper wiring
  • Knob-and-tube replacement
  • Replacement of aging branch circuits
  • Grounding improvements
  • Updated circuit layout
  • Electrical testing
  • Updated electrical connections
  • Outlet and switch upgrades

Adding Modern Electrical Circuits

Many older homes were built with far fewer electrical circuits than a modern household needs.

A whole-house rewire allows new circuits to be added where appropriate so major areas and electrical loads are not forced to share a limited number of circuits.

New or upgraded circuits may be installed for:
  • Kitchens
  • Refrigerators
  • Dishwashers
  • Microwaves
  • Bathrooms
  • Laundry rooms
  • Garages
  • Home offices
  • HVAC equipment
  • Lighting
  • Entertainment equipment
  • Outdoor electrical needs
  • Future electrical upgrades

Updating Outlets & Switches

Whole-house rewiring can also include replacing older outlets and switches and adding electrical devices where they are needed.

Older two-prong outlets can be addressed as part of the updated electrical system, and additional outlets can be installed to reduce reliance on extension cords or outdated room layouts.

Outlet and switch locations can also be adjusted during larger renovations to better match how each room will be used.

Outlet and switch upgrades can include:
  • Grounded outlet installation
  • Two-prong outlet replacement
  • Additional outlets
  • New switches
  • Outlet relocation
  • Switch relocation

Knob-and-Tube Wiring Replacement

Knob-and-tube wiring was widely used in older homes before modern wiring methods became standard. The system uses separate conductors supported by ceramic knobs and tubes and does not include the grounding conductor found in modern electrical wiring.

TNT Electric provides knob-and-tube rewiring for homeowners who want to replace active older wiring with a modern electrical system.

Knob-and-Tube Rewiring May Include:

  • Inspection of existing knob-and-tube wiring
  • Identification of active older circuits
  • Evaluation of accessible wiring
  • Disconnection or removal of outdated wiring where appropriate
  • Installation of modern copper wiring
  • Grounded circuits
  • Grounded outlets
  • New electrical circuits
  • Electrical panel connections
  • Testing of the updated system

If you are unsure whether your home still has active knob-and-tube wiring, TNT Electric can inspect the electrical system and determine what type of wiring is present.

Whole-House Rewiring & Electrical Panel Upgrades

A whole-house rewire does not automatically mean your electrical panel must also be replaced.

Before rewiring begins, TNT Electric can evaluate the existing panel to determine whether it has sufficient capacity and breaker space for the updated circuits.

An electrical panel upgrade may be recommended if:

  • The existing electrical panel is outdated
  • The panel does not have enough breaker space
  • The electrical service is undersized for current demand
  • A significant number of new circuits are being added
  • The home is adding major electrical equipment
  • Additional capacity is needed for future upgrades

For homes with adequate panel capacity, it may be possible to update the wiring without replacing the electrical panel.

Can You Rewire a House Without Removing All the Drywall?

One of the most common concerns homeowners have about whole-house rewiring is how much wall or ceiling damage will be required.

In many homes, electricians can route new wiring through existing wall cavities, attics, crawl spaces, and ceilings. This can reduce the amount of drywall that needs to be opened. However, some access points may still be necessary.

The amount of access required depends on factors such as:

  • Age and construction of the home
  • Number of stories
  • Attic accessibility
  • Crawl-space accessibility
  • Wall construction
  • Fire blocking
  • Location of existing wiring
  • Desired outlet and switch locations
  • Areas already being remodeled

TNT Electric can evaluate the home’s construction before the project and explain what type of access is likely to be required.

A whole-home rewiring

Rewiring an Older Home During a Remodel

If you are already planning a major renovation, it may be a good time to evaluate your home’s existing wiring.

Kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, additions, and whole-home remodeling projects frequently expose walls or ceilings that normally make electrical wiring difficult to access.

Coordinating rewiring with the remodel can also make it easier to plan:

  • New kitchen circuits
  • Dedicated appliance circuits
  • Recessed lighting
  • Additional outlets
  • New switch locations
  • Bathroom electrical
  • New lighting layouts
  • Electrical panel upgrades
  • Additional electrical capacity

Updating the electrical system at the same time can help ensure the wiring supports both the renovated space and the home’s future electrical needs.

How Much Does Whole-House Rewiring Cost?

There is no single price for rewiring a home because the scope can vary substantially from one property to another.

The most accurate estimate requires evaluating the existing electrical system and understanding how much wiring, circuit work, and related electrical equipment needs to be updated.

Factors That Affect Whole-House Rewiring Cost Include:

  • Size of the home
  • Age of the home
  • Number of rooms
  • Type of existing wiring
  • Amount of wiring being replaced
  • Number of circuits
  • Number of outlets and switches
  • Number of stories
  • Attic access
  • Crawl-space access
  • Wall and ceiling accessibility
  • Knob-and-tube wiring
  • Aluminum wiring
  • Electrical panel capacity
  • Electrical panel upgrades
  • New circuits being added
  • Remodeling occurring at the same time
  • Permit and inspection requirements

TNT Electric can inspect the home’s electrical system, determine the scope of the work, and provide pricing based on the specific project.

I hired TNT Electric to run power to my new shed and install plugs and lighting. Briar was super responsive and answered my many questions and had a crew out here in short order. The team was fantastic - Noah, Ben, Eric and everyone who worked on this project were friendly, helpful, honest, respectful of my property and on-time every time. They threw in a couple of nice extras and provided recommendations based on what I am using the shed for, such as plug locations, dedicated plugs, light locations, etc. I have been working from the shed for a couple of weeks now and everything is perfect. I am beyond pleased with their work and will gladly hire them again.

Briar and team changed out our entire electric panel + added a 20A circuit for the treadmill in our garage easily and smoothly for a reasonable price. Our upgraded panel is much better quality, everything works as intended, and we are very happy with the job done. Briar is also honest about what we needed for the house and didn't try to upcharge us unnecessarily, which was definitely very much appreciated.

**Yelp Review for TNT Electric** I can't say enough good things about my experience with TNT Electric! They truly deserve a five-star rating. From the start, their timeliness was impressive, especially since we were working on a tight schedule. They were incredibly flexible, accommodating different phases of work happening throughout our home, which made the process so much easier. The professionalism of the team was evident as they thoroughly understood the scope of the project. They communicated updates clearly and helped us as homeowners navigate the process, making everything feel manageable. Their work ranged from installing basic light switches to removing kitchen lighting boxes, and they did an outstanding job providing a smooth ceiling finish for the new recessed lights. Additionally, they expertly installed ceiling fans and external motion-sensor lights, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of our home. Overall, TNT Electric made this experience seamless and stress-free. I highly recommend them for any electrical needs!

We used TNT Electric again after they did such an incredible job in our kitchen. We had recessed lighting put in our living room. It was so dark this winter with all the fog we had. This recessed lighting is amazing. Thank you especially to Slava and Noah. Briar was able to fit us in when someone rescheduled. Nice, neat and timely. Great business.

TNT Electric did an awesome job for our recent master bathroom and guest bathroom remodel. The guys were very professional and had a lot of experience. The team wired and installed multiple scones, moved and added recess lighting, added multiple pendant lights, wired for vanity lighted mirror and installed plugs for 2 smart toilets. Here's just a few points on what made this company stand out: 1. Quick response, great communication and best quote. I requested quotes from 3 other companies and Briar was quick to respond with a thorough quote breaking down all the work which I really appreciated. Other companies just gave the overall price or didn't even respond. 2. Great at managing their resources and very service oriented. TNT did all the prep and was one of the first trades to complete their work on schedule. The vanities were installed but needed modifications which caused 2 of the scones not to line up. One call to Briar and he had his guy out to quickly make the modifications before the tile guys came to tile the walls keeping us on schedule which I really appreciated. 3. Able to manage last minute changes. I had a few last minute modifications I wanted to add and Briar was able to make all modifications with no issues. 4. Came back at no extra charge to install all lighting. Once the remodel was completed and we were ready to install the lighting, Noah came out at no extra charge and did a wonderful job making sure everything was properly installed. Some of my pendant lights had heavy crystals and he replaced and installed a heavy duty light box to make sure all lights were secure at no extra cost. He added dimmer switches on several lights too. The other companies I quoted did not offer this service or wanted to charge me extra. In summary, I would highly recommend TNT Electric for all your electrical needs. Great people and awesome service.

Whole House Rewiring FAQs

How do I know if my house needs to be rewired?

Common signs include two-prong or ungrounded outlets, frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, overloaded circuits, outdated wiring, knob-and-tube wiring, or an electrical system that cannot keep up with the home’s current electrical demand.

A professional electrical inspection can determine whether the home needs a complete rewire or more targeted wiring upgrades.

How much does it cost to rewire a house?

Whole-house rewiring costs vary based on the size and construction of the home, accessibility, type of existing wiring, number of circuits, outlets and switches, electrical panel capacity, and the overall scope of work.

An on-site evaluation is the best way to determine the actual cost of rewiring a specific home.

Can a house be rewired without removing all the drywall?

In many cases, new wiring can be routed through attics, crawl spaces, ceilings, and existing wall cavities without removing large sections of drywall.

Small access openings may still be necessary depending on the construction of the home and where new wiring needs to be installed.

How long does a whole-house rewire take?

The timeline depends on the size of the home, accessibility of the wiring, number of circuits, type of existing electrical system, and whether additional work such as an electrical panel upgrade is included.

TNT Electric can provide a better project timeline after evaluating the home.

Do I need to move out while my house is being rewired?

Not necessarily.

Depending on the size and scope of the project, homeowners may be able to remain in the house while electrical work is completed in stages. Certain rooms or circuits may temporarily be without power during the project.

TNT Electric can explain what to expect once the specific rewiring scope has been determined.

Does my electrical panel need to be replaced when my home is rewired?

Not always.

The existing electrical panel should be evaluated to determine whether it has enough breaker space and electrical capacity for the updated circuits.

If the panel is outdated, undersized, full, or otherwise unsuitable for the new electrical system, an electrical panel upgrade may be recommended.

What is knob-and-tube wiring?

Knob-and-tube is an older electrical wiring method commonly found in homes built before the mid-20th century. It uses separate conductors supported by ceramic knobs and tubes and does not include the grounding conductor found in modern electrical wiring.

TNT Electric provides dedicated knob-and-tube rewiring services.

Should aluminum wiring be replaced?

Aluminum branch wiring should be evaluated by a qualified electrician.

Depending on the type of wiring, condition of the connections, and overall electrical system, the appropriate solution may involve specialized repairs or replacement with copper wiring.

Can you add more outlets when rewiring a home?

Yes. A whole-house rewire provides an opportunity to add or relocate outlets, switches, circuits, and lighting connections based on how the home is used today.

Can rewiring help with frequently tripping breakers?

It can if the breaker trips are related to overloaded or outdated circuits.

However, tripping breakers can have several possible causes. The electrical system should first be evaluated to identify the source of the problem before determining whether rewiring is necessary.

Can you rewire just part of a house?

Yes, depending on the condition of the existing electrical system.

Some homes may need a complete rewire, while others may benefit from targeted wiring replacement or upgrades in specific areas. TNT Electric can inspect the wiring and determine which approach is appropriate.
